What is a Spill Kit?

A spill kit is a set of materials and equipment used to control, contain, and clean up hazardous chemical spills. These supplies are placed on standby in work areas that carry the risk of chemical spills, including laboratories, shipping hubs, manufacturing plants, and warehouses.

Workplace spills can suddenly occur in workplaces, so it’s always best to be prepared—with a complete spill kit and well-trained personnel.

There are four general classifications of spill kits:

  • General Spill Kits are available for the clean-up and control of non-hazardous and non-aggressive liquid spills.
  • Oil-Only Spill Kits are used for the management and clean-up of oil-based products, such as grease and various machine lubricants.
  • Anti-Static Spill Kits are used for cleaning up flammable and explosive liquids.
  • Chemical Spill Kits are for aggressive and hazardous liquids.

Depending on the nature of your business, it’s best to choose a spill kit that can best address potential spills that may occur on-site.

What is the Purpose of the Spill Kit?

Portable spill kits are used in the defence against spills in the workplace, whether hazardous or benign. These equipment are cost-effective clean-ups for liquid spills on sealed surfaces and are colour-coded depending on their type.

Once a spill occurs, these pre-packaged materials all work in conjunction to control and clean-up workplace spills. When readily available, spills can be addressed immediately and cleaned efficiently.

Aside from the cleaning and control implements, spill kits contain personal protective equipment for the ensured safety of the user.

What Items are in a Spill Kit?

The primary purpose of the spill kit is to prevent the spill from leaving the site, especially through your drainage systems where they can travel further and cause harm. To control the liquid, spill kits contain the following:

  • Absorbent Socks (Sausages, Booms, Snakes)
  • Absorbent Cushions
  • Absorbent Pads
  • Kitty Litter
  • Dust Pans and Brooms
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Disposal Bags and Seals

What PPE is in a Spill Kit?

To ensure the safety of the user, spill kits contain appropriate personal protective equipment, which can include:

  • Suits
  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Face Shields
  • Respirators
  • Boots
